Frequently Asked Questions
How does this work?
Due to the social distancing measures currently enacted because of COVID-19, we are having to change the way we sign students up for beginning band. We normally have beginner sign-up nights where we allow students to tryout all of the instruments and make a decision based on how well they thought they did on each one. This is not possible this year so we are having to adjust. As of now, we are encouraging everyone to complete the form found HERE. You will be asked to tell us your top three instrument choices. If you're not sure, be sure to visit the instruments page so you can learn more about each instrument and hear from the band director that teaches that instrument. We will make every effort to allow everyone to play their top choice, however, there are some instruments that are always extremely popular and we have to limit the numbers on these instruments based on needs of the band and class size. Every student will eventually be tested on their instrument of choice, but when that happens is still unknown because we don't know when we're going to be allowed back into the school. For now, we need a starting place so please complete the sign-up form and we will be in touch with you soon.
Can my child try out the instruments?
Yes. As of right now, it is our goal to let every child try the instruments before next school year begins. The current COVID-19 situation is evolving by the day and we are unsure at this time when we will be allowed to resume having contact with students again. When we have some answers we will send out information on how we are going to proceed.
How do I get the instrument?
Right now, no one needs to get anything. We need to confirm that the instrument your child wants to play is actually a good fit for your child. There are many factors that go into whether a student will be successful on an instrument or not so we need to have them actually try out that instrument before making a decision. We've seen many students come to one our instrument tryout nights convinced they were going to play a particular instrument and leave having changed their mind completely.
After we have confirmed the instrument your child is going to play in beginning band we will send out information on which instrument brand/models are acceptable, what supplies your child needs, and where these can be located.
Are there school-owned instruments?
Yes. We provide Oboes, Bassoons, French Horns, Trombones, Baritones, and Tubas.
How will I know when the decision is final?
We will reach out to you after a final decision is made, but ideally, we will see everyone in person and let each student try the instruments before a final decision is made.
